A ballistic missile fired by North Korea targeting the coast of Japan fell into the sea on Tuesday morning. With Japan’s missile defense system activated, people had to be moved from populated areas to underground bunkers. This is the first time in five years that Japan has to face such a major security threat from North Korea. The US Indo-Pacific Command has also come forward to condemn the incident. The missile, which was launched from a center in North Korea, traveled 4,500 kilometers and landed near the US-controlled island of Guam near Japan. Earlier in 2017, North Korea launched a missile targeting Japan. But this is the first time a North Korean missile has traveled that far. The new test comes despite a United Nations ban on North Korea testing ballistic and nuclear missiles. North Korea also violated the rule that requires the knowledge and consent of other countries before launching missiles at them. Even if it is a test launch of missiles, many countries are reluctant to do so as it could be mistaken for an attack. Although North Korea did not launch a nuclear missile, Japan’s biggest fear is the same.
