Bangkok Issues Air Quality Alert as PM 2.5 Levels Rise, Asks for Work-From-home Cooperation

Bangkok residents are facing a return of hazardous air quality as PM 2.5 dust levels have climbed to the orange level across all 50 districts, prompting a call for increased work-from-home arrangements and heightened health precautions. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is urging agencies to voluntarily adopt remote work policies on December 4, 2025, to mitigate the accumulation of pollutants.
Widespread Pollution Impacts Bangkok and Surrounding Provinces
The concerning rise in PM 2.5 – particulate matter 2.5 micrometers in diameter – isn’t limited to the capital. Surrounding central region provinces, including Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan, Samut Songkhram, Chachoengsao, and Pathum Thani, are also experiencing elevated levels of air pollution. The BMA utilizes a color-coded system to categorize PM 2.5 concentrations: blue (0-15 μg/cubic meter), green (15.1-25 μg/cubic meter), yellow (25.1-37.5 μg/cubic meter), orange (37.6-75 μg/cubic meter), and red (75.1 μg/cubic meter and above). The current orange level is considered perilous to health for vulnerable populations.
Voluntary WFH Initiative Aims to Reduce Traffic and Pollution
Governor Chatchat Sitthiphan is spearheading the effort to address the deteriorating air quality. The BMA is requesting, but not mandating, that organizations capable of supporting remote work adjust their operations on December 4th. Essential public services will remain operational as usual, and schools will stay open, with a focus on controlling outdoor activities and ensuring students wear masks.
The decision to request WFH is based on previous trials. “Last year, when experimenting with WFH for 1 day, it was found that the traffic volume decreased by approximately 13%, which helped reduce dust and reduce traffic problems,” a senior official stated. Currently, approximately 170,000 individuals participate in the WFH program, falling short of the 300,000-person target, with involvement from 346 agencies.
Criteria for WFH Announcements and Additional Mitigation Measures
The BMA has established specific criteria for future WFH announcements: orange PM 2.5 levels must be recorded in all 50 districts for two consecutive days, coupled with an increase in heat index readings. Beyond WFH, the administration is emphasizing a multi-pronged approach to pollution control, including stricter regulations at construction sites, vehicle emission inspections, vehicle maintainance encouragement, and a crackdown on open burning.
Public Health Advisory: Protect Yourself from PM 2.5 Exposure
Governor Chatchat stressed the importance of personal protective measures. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, and utilize air purifiers, particularly those in at-risk groups, including children and individuals with respiratory conditions. Reducing vehicle usage by approximately 10% is
