Dhaka: A fire broke out at a BM chemical container depot near the city of Chittagong in southeastern Bangladesh at around 9pm yesterday. Then one of the containers exploded with a terrifying noise and the fire spread like wildfire.

Noorul Alam, an assistant inspector at the Chattram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) outpost, said: “Following the fire at the BM container warehouse, firefighters rushed to the scene with 19 vehicles to put out the blaze. Then a terrifying explosion was heard. The fire then spread rapidly from one container to another. Police and rescue workers were involved in the rescue operation. So far, the bodies of 49 people, including workers and firefighters, have been recovered. More than 450 people were seriously injured, including firefighters. Of these, 350 have been admitted to CMCH Hospital. Others are being treated at military hospitals and some private hospitals. The plight of many is worrying. “

Ashraf Uddin, the zonal commissioner of Chattram, said: “The families of those killed in the fire will receive $ 560 ($ 50,000) and the injured will receive $ 224 ($ 20,000 each).”

Prime Minister Hasina mourns

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The inquiry committee has also been directed to investigate the accident and file a report within 3 days. The explosion at the container plant was about 4 km away. Is said to be felt in the perimeter.

The head of the fire department, Brigadier General Mohammad Mainudeen, said, “Preliminary investigations have revealed that various chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide, were stored in containers, which was the main reason for the spread of the fire.”

BM Container warehouse director Mujibur Rahman said, “The cause of the fire is not clear. We assume that the fire may have started from the container. Steps have been taken to provide special treatment to the injured. The cost of this will be borne by our company. As well as appropriate compensation for those injured. We will provide the necessary assistance to the families affected by this accident. ”
