Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali called for investment from Canada citing Bangladesh as the best place for foreign investors.

He said this to reporters after a meeting with Jayendu Dey, the resident representative of the IMF in Bangladesh, and Lily Nichols, the Canadian High Commissioner assigned to Bangladesh, on Thursday (February 8).

In response to a question about what was discussed with the High Commissioner of Canada, he said, there are many possibilities. Prime Minister says canola oil is healthy, there is a possibility of it. We will see what can be done. There are many high tariffs, but the potential is there.

In response to the question whether there was any talk about investment, he said, we want investment. The ones that were there before are gone, now we are re-casting them. Where good facilities are available, we will definitely be interested, we will see them.

In response to the question whether there has been any talk about taking students from Bangladesh or skill development in Canada, he said, migration is definitely there. Canada also anchors. There is a growing student community. So there’s that. The Prime Minister of Canada calls our Prime Minister mother. They are French Canadians. The French have that tradition.
