The United Nations Committee on Disappearances (WGEID) has welcomed Bangladesh for signing the International Convention on Anti-Disappearances.

In a Twitter message on Thursday (August 29), WGEID said, WGEID welcomes Bangladesh for signing the International Convention on Anti-Disappearance. This will allow us to take our next steps.

The chief adviser Dr. at the meeting of the Interim Government Advisory Council at the Rashtriya Guest House Yamuna on Thursday. Muhammad Yunus signed the charter.

Regarding the decisions of the advisory council meeting, the cabinet department said that one of the priority issues of the current interim government is to ensure the human rights of every citizen and make necessary institutional reforms in this context. For this purpose, the interim government has decided to take action on Bangladesh’s accession to the international convention entitled ‘International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED)’ on a priority basis.

ICPPED is the only international convention under the auspices of the United Nations, adopted on Enforced Disappearance, which aims to prevent enforced disappearance or disappearance, ensure justice for victims and enhance international cooperation in combating this serious human rights violation.

Incidentally, before the International Day of Missing Persons announced by the United Nations on August 30, the proposal for Bangladesh’s accession to ICPPED was approved in the advisory council meeting today.

In December 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted the Anti-Disappearance Charter. Its implementation began in 2010 after 32 countries signed it. The overall objective of the charter is to end impunity for these crimes, to establish justice and to provide assistance to victims. 75 countries have joined this charter.

Bangladesh has signed 8 of the 9 UN Human Rights Charters. Bangladesh has not previously signed the Anti-Disappearance Convention despite long-standing requests from the United Nations.
