Over Two Million Filipinos Register for Barangay and Youth Elections, Marking Historic Turnout

A surge in voter registration across the Philippines has resulted in over two million citizens signing up for the upcoming Barangay and sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE), signaling a heightened interest in local governance and youth representation. The 10-day registration period, concluded recently, is being hailed as the moast accomplished in the nation’s history.
Record-Breaking Registration drive
According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), a total of 2,136,230 applicants were processed during the registration period. This figure surpasses previous records, despite the relatively short timeframe. Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia announced the numbers on Sunday,emphasizing the meaning of the turnout.

Regional Breakdown of Registrations

- National Capital Region: 156,456 applications
- Region VII: 144,141 applications
- Region I: 141,121 applications

Youth Engagement a Key Factor
Garcia specifically highlighted the notable number of young people who registered to participate in the upcoming village and youth polls. This suggests a growing awareness and engagement among the youth demographic regarding their civic duties and the importance of local representation.
Furthermore,the Special Register Anywhere Program proved exceptionally popular,garnering 881,772 voter registrations in just four days. Garcia described this program as “the most successful registration in history,” achieving the largest registrations in the “shortest period.” A photograph captured on August 5, 2025, at SM Manila shows citizens lining up to submit their applications, illustrating the high level of participation.
