Oprah Winfrey Reveals Painful 1985 Encounter with Joan Rivers, Years of Self-Blame

Oprah Winfrey is opening up about the lasting impact of a deeply hurtful exchange with the late Joan Rivers, revealing how the comedian’s criticism fueled years of self-doubt and internalized shame regarding her weight. The media mogul detailed the incident while promoting her new book, “Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It’s Like to Be Free,” co-authored with Dr. Ania Jastreboff.

Winfrey’s weight and health have been subjects of public discussion for decades, particularly during the late 1980s when her career was gaining momentum. Magazines and comedians frequently targeted her size, creating a “tough period” where she felt constantly scrutinized. It was during this time, in 1985, that she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Joan Rivers, an experience she now describes as “horrible.”

According to Winfrey, Rivers directly confronted her about her weight during the interview. “Joan Rivers said to me, ‘Shame, shame, shame on you for not losing the weight. How did you gain the weight?’” Winfrey recalled, adding that Rivers suggested she could return to the show if she lost 15 pounds. Surprisingly, Winfrey admitted she wasn’t initially angry with Rivers, but rather felt compelled to meet the imposed standard. “I thought, ‘I’ve got to get on it, I’ve got to lose those 15 pounds.’”

The incident, however, sparked a cycle of self-blame that lasted for years. Winfrey explained that she internalized the criticism, believing she was at fault for her weight and that the jokes made at her expense were justified. “What I felt all those years, the shame and the blame that I gave to myself, I felt it was because it was my fault,” she stated. “I felt embarrassed every time I put the weight back on. I accepted it because I felt that they were right.”

This wasn’t an isolated incident, as the source text notes Rivers had a history of making critical comments about the appearances of Black women, referencing a “cringey interview” with Whoopi Goldberg in the 1990s where Rivers questioned her beauty and suggested she needed to be thinner.

However, Winfrey’s perspective has shifted dramatically in recent years. After achieving significant weight loss through the use of GLP-1 medication and adopting healthier lifestyle choices, she appears confident and healthy. The narrative suggests that those who previously criticized her weight now have little to say, marking a powerful turning point in her journey toward self-acceptance and freedom.
