FDU Men’s Soccer Claims Tenth NEC Championship Title, Secures NCAA Tournament Berth
FDU men’s soccer etched its name in Northeast Conference (NEC) history on Sunday, defeating Saint Francis 1-0 in the NEC Championship to claim their tenth title and an automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA tournament. The victory marks the program’s first championship win since 2022 and avenges an earlier season loss to the Red Flash.
The championship clash, played on a blustery afternoon in Teaneck, New Jersey, was a tightly contested affair. The Knights entered the match seeking retribution after suffering their only NEC defeat of the season – a 1-0 loss to Saint Francis in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Riding the momentum of a 3-1 semifinal victory over Le Moyne, fueled by a brace from Connor O’Reilly, FDU was determined to seize the championship title on home turf.
From the opening whistle, University Stadium was a cauldron of intensity. Both defenses proved formidable in the first half, with FDU preventing Saint Francis from registering a single shot. The Knights managed four attempts, with one on target – a chance from Jaime Barbero skillfully saved by Saint Francis goalkeeper Diego Garciarena.
The defensive stalemate continued into the second half, with both teams failing to break the deadlock despite FDU outshooting Saint Francis 6-0 during the frame. The Knights controlled possession but struggled to convert their dominance into a goal. A pivotal moment arrived in the 88th minute when Saint Francis midfielder Julian Quiroga received his second yellow card, resulting in a red card and leaving the Red Flash to play a man down.
As the match headed into overtime, the tension reached fever pitch. It took just three minutes of extra time for FDU to find the decisive breakthrough. In the 93rd minute, Ryan Kopay delivered a pinpoint crossing pass, finding Jaime Barbero unmarked in front of the goal. Barbero rose above the defense, powerfully heading the ball past Garciarena and igniting scenes of jubilation.
The golden goal secured the 1-0 victory for FDU, crowning them NEC champions and guaranteeing their place in the NCAA tournament. Barbero’s sixth goal of the season – a new career high – cemented his status as a clutch performer in NEC Championship games, having previously scored a brace, including the game-winner, in the 2022 title match.
Following the final whistle, the Knights celebrated their triumph by hoisting the championship trophy. Four players – Barbero, Arnau Rabassa Guillamon, Gabriel LeGuenand, and Connor O’Reilly – were recognized for their outstanding performances with selection to the All-Tournament Team. O’Reilly’s exceptional play throughout the tournament earned him the prestigious title of 2025 NEC Tournament MVP.
FDU now awaits the announcement of their NCAA tournament fate, which will be revealed during the 2025 Selection Show on Monday, November 17 at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the Knights’ journey on Instagram and X @FDUKnightsMSOC.
