According to early estimates, Barbie has collected Rs 5 crore on its first day in India. Although this is less than half of the Rs 13 crore earned by Oppenheimer, Barbie has shown promise. In the US, Barbie has already earned $22.3 million, surpassing the $10.5 million collected by Oppenheimer, as reported by Variety.
The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer has brought much-needed respite to the Indian box office after a dull period. Previous Bollywood releases, such as Satyaprem Ki Katha and Zara Hatke Zara Bach Ke, had started to revive the box office, and these two films are expected to further boost the business. Industry experts anticipate that both movies will earn Rs 120-140 crore in their first week in India. Mission Impossible 7, which was released the previous week, is still running in theaters and has already collected over Rs 80 crore.
Critics have praised Greta Gerwig’s direction in Barbie, with Shalini Langar of the Indian Express noting the film’s sharps jabs at gender wars and the meta awareness of Barbie’s beauty. Langar also commented on Helen Mirren’s role as the narrator, emphasizing that casting Margot Robbie perfectly captures Barbie’s essence.
