FC Barcelona, a prestigious club in Spain’s Primera Liga, will visit Korea for the first time in 14 years to face off against FC Seoul in the K League 1.
Spanish media ‘Sport’ reported on the 29th (hereinafter Korean time), “Barcelona promoted a pre-season friendly match to generate income, and as a result, agreed to hold the match in Seoul in the last week of May.”
Local media did not specifically reveal Barca’s opponent, but after reporting, it was confirmed that it was FC Seoul, which uses the Seoul World Cup Stadium as its home base.
Barcelona successfully completed its Asian tour last year by visiting Japan and playing friendly games with Vissel Kobe and others in the J League, but it seems that this year’s destination has been decided on Korea.
According to reports, Barcelona is expected to head to Korea for a friendly match immediately after playing the final match of the 2023-24 Primera Liga against Sevilla on May 26 local time.
Sport said, “Barcelona wants to create a good image in Korea as it did in Japan. “Holding matches around the world will help strengthen Barcelona’s brand,” he said. “Soccer is a popular sport in Korea, so Barcelona’s visit to Korea is certain to be a success.”
If the visit to Korea goes through, Barcelona will play a game in Korea for the first time in 14 years since August 2010. At the time, Barça, including Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), played a preseason game with the K-League All-Stars.
An official from the Korea Professional Football League said, “We recently received an inquiry from a broadcaster about holding a match between Barcelona and a K League 1 team at the end of May,” and the Korea Football Association also said, “We have received related information and are reviewing it.”
Barcelona’s likely opponent is FC Seoul. The match date is likely to be May 30th or 31st.
However, what has emerged as a variable in the success of the game is the K League 1 schedule. K League 1 matches are scheduled for May 25th and 26th and 28th and 29th.
Seoul has a tight schedule scheduled for games against Pohang (away) on May 25th, Gimcheon Sangmu (away) on the 28th, and Gwangju (home) on June 2nd. If we also include an evaluation match against Barcelona, we will have to play as many as four games in one week.
A federation official responded cautiously, saying, “It is not appropriate to change the already planned K-League 1 schedule due to an event match,” and “Under the current circumstances, it does not seem easy to hold the match at the end of May.”
