Livingston County Jail Sentence for ‘The Devoted Barn’ Owner in animal Cruelty Case
A Livingston County juryS verdict has resulted in a six-month jail sentence for Melissa Borden, 52, owner of the now-infamous “The Devoted Barn,” alongside five years of probation and a considerable financial penalty. The sentencing marks a significant outcome in a case involving allegations of widespread animal cruelty and neglect.
Background of the Case
borden was found guilty in October on a felony count of abandoning or cruelty to 25 or more animals, with the initial offence dating back to December 26th, 2023.The six-day trial in Livingston County Circuit Court concluded swiftly, with jurors reaching a verdict in under an hour. Upon her release from jail, Borden will be required to wear an electronic tether for nine months. She is also mandated to surrender all animals currently in her possession and pay restitution totaling approximately $102,000 to the county.
“Today was a good day for the animals,” stated a representative from the advocacy group “Not Devoted – A Blog about The Devoted Barn.” “This is a precedent setting sentence. Livingston County understood the assignment and they executed with precision what should be done. Every animal advocate is indebted to them for their professionalism and care. The grandiose reign of Melissa Borden is OVER. She can no longer disguise helping any animal as a way to get money. She will need to get employment and start paying her debt to people and society.”
Details of the Inquiry
The investigation into Borden’s operation began with numerous complaints regarding the welfare of animals kept on a property off Foley Road, near Hartland Road in Tyrone Township.A search warrant was executed in January 2024,leading to the seizure of 64 animals, including goats, pigs, donkeys, sheep,a llama, and an alpaca. These animals were afterward relocated and assessed by veterinary professionals. Tragically, four pigs were euthanized due to their condition.
Concerns raised by former volunteers centered on inadequate shelter, insufficient food supplies, and the co-mingling of different species in the same enclosures. Borden consistently refuted these allegations on social media platforms.
ongoing Legal Proceedings
This sentencing pertains to the first of two criminal cases against Borden. A separate charge of abandoning or cruelty to 4 to 10 animals, stemming from an incident on April 23rd, 2024, at a farm in oceola Township, remains pending. In that case, some animals were seized, while others were relocated. Borden previously disputed the accuracy of these cost estimates.
Court records indicate a final settlement conference is scheduled for March 6th. Should a plea agreement not be reached,a jury trial is set to commence on March 9th. The outcome of this second case could further impact Borden’s future and the fate of any remaining animals under her care.
