Football Agent Jonathan Barnett Faces Rape and Torture Allegations Amidst Criminal Investigation

A former “super agent” in the world of football, Jonathan Barnett, is facing escalating legal challenges, including a criminal investigation in London, stemming from accusations of rape, kidnapping, and torture of a former partner. Barnett, who retired in March 2024 after a celebrated career that included brokering Gareth Bale’s transfer to Real Madrid, allegedly subjected the woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, to years of abuse.

From Football Powerbroker to Criminal Suspect

Barnett, 75, was lauded by Forbes magazine in 2019 as the world’s best agent, having negotiated €1.178 billion in transfers and contracts. His prominence in the football world, particularly his representation of Gareth Bale, stands in stark contrast to the disturbing allegations now surfacing. The case initially gained traction with a civil lawsuit filed in California last July, alleging deprivation of liberty and abuse on up to 36 occasions over six years.

The situation escalated with Barnett’s arrest at Heathrow Airport on Saturday, March 29th, on suspicion of rape and serious bodily harm, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police. He has since been released on bail. According to court documents submitted by his legal team, Barnett acknowledges paying his accuser “well over €1,132,519” since the end of their “consensual personal relationship.”

Allegations of “Financial Slavery” and Abuse

The accusations against Barnett are deeply disturbing. The plaintiff alleges a pattern of abuse spanning six years, beginning with an incident in a London hotel room in 2017. She claims she was subjected to sexual abuse and torture, allegedly facilitated by a situation of “financial slavery.” Barnett vehemently denies the allegations.

His legal team is actively fighting the civil lawsuit, filing a motion to dismiss the case in California on grounds of lack of personal jurisdiction. They argue that all payments made to the accuser were conducted in England and that Barnett’s primary residence and business are located in London. The defense contends that “there is no significant connection between the alleged conduct…and the state of California.”

Why California?

Despite the focus on the UK, the civil lawsuit was initially filed in the United States because, according to lawyers for Jane Doe, Barnett, “with the assistance of other defendants, trafficked, threatened, tortured and held Ms. Doe captive in numerous locations around the world, including Los Angeles, California” between 2017 and 2023. The plaintiff, an Australian citizen, asserts that these actions provide a legal basis for the case to be heard in a US court.

High-Powered Legal Representation and Agency Denial

Barnett has retained Marty Singer, a prominent Hollywood lawyer known for representing high-profile figures like Sylvester Stallone and Demi Moore, who reportedly charges $950 per hour. His agency, Creative Artists, has denied any business ties to the woman who filed the lawsuit and has also filed a motion to dismiss the rape accusations, claiming they occurred “more than 39 times.”

The case raises serious questions about institutional abuse and the potential for power imbalances within the world of high-profile sports representation. Barnett maintains his innocence and is preparing to vigorously defend himself against both the criminal investigation in the UK and the civil lawsuit in the United States.
