Haikou Cup Basketball League: A Slam Dunk for Sports Tourism and Local Talent

The 2025 “Haikou Cup” Basketball League isn’t just a sporting event; it’s a catalyst for economic growth, community engagement, and the development of local basketball talent in Haikou City. The league, recently recognized as a “2025 China sports Tourism Quality Project,” concluded its championship round on October 16th, drawing keen crowds and demonstrating the power of integrating sports with tourism.

A League of growing Momentum

The recently concluded 2025 “Haikou Cup” Basketball League saw remarkable participation numbers, with 128 teams and 2,048 players competing over a five-month period. The event attracted approximately 407,000 offline spectators and 503,000 viewers tuning in to the live video streams. This significant engagement underscores the league’s growing popularity and its ability to capture the attention of both residents and tourists.

Cultivating the Next Generation of Basketball Stars

Beyond the spectacle, the “haikou Cup” is actively fostering the development of local basketball players. This year’s competition featured a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, including players born after 2005. Mo Ruokun, leader of the cx898 team from Qiongshan District, noted that the youngest member of his team is just 20 years old. Despite being a relatively new team, cx898 has already competed in multiple national tournaments, benefiting from a mentorship dynamic between experienced and younger players. “Through ‘old players leading new players,’ many post-2000 players in the team have grown rapidly, and the team’s cohesion has become stronger,” Ruokun explained.

The league provides a valuable platform for players to hone their skills and gain experience. Li Xiaotao, a player from the Hainan Vocational University of science and Technology, expressed that while his team secured a silver medal, the competition provided invaluable opportunities for personal growth and camaraderie. Jin Hao, team leader of Meihua Hetai Hotel, echoed this sentiment, stating, “More and more high-level athletes are participating in the event, which has created a platform for everyone to learn and communicate with each other.”

CUBA All-Star player Guan Yejia highlighted the influx of promising young athletes, observing that “These young players shine on the court with their super physical fitness. Their joining injects fresh blood into the local basketball team.” Zhang Wanxiang, vice president of the Haikou Basketball Association, affirmed the commitment to continued investment in talent development, stating the association plans to host more high-level events to identify and nurture future stars who will represent Haikou in national competitions.

the “Sports + Tourism” Synergy

The success of the “Haikou Cup” extends beyond the basketball court, demonstrating the effectiveness of Haikou City’s strategy to integrate sports and tourism. The event has revitalized urban spaces, bringing activity and commerce to core business districts like Friendship International Trade City, Friendship Nanhai City, Xingxingli Chaoku Cultural District, and huacai Haikou Bay Plaza.

This integration isn’t merely about location; it’s about creating a holistic experience. The organizing committee collaborated with business districts to offer consumer coupons, lucky draws, and themed interactions, boosting participation and driving economic activity. According to a representative from Friendship International Trade City, restaurants within the mall experienced long queues during the finals, and retail and leisure venues saw a significant increase in turnover.

A representative from the Municipal Tourism and Culture Bureau emphasized the long-term vision for the “Haikou Cup,” stating that the league will be expanded to further connect national fitness initiatives, business district vitality, and urban culture. The event has become a vibrant depiction of the city’s spirit, bringing together corporate employees, students, and retirees in a shared festivity of athleticism and community.

The 2025 “Haikou Cup” Basketball League serves as a compelling model for how strategic investment in sports can yield significant economic and social benefits, solidifying Haikou’s position as a dynamic hub for sports tourism and athletic development.
