Libertas Gym & Basket: A Decade of Growth and Innovation in Italian Youth Sports
Table of Contents
A dynamic sports organization is rapidly expanding its reach across Italy, offering comprehensive programs in basketball and gymnastics for athletes of all ages. Libertas Gym & Basket, SSD, founded in 2014, has quickly become a prominent force in the Azzurra Team universe, boasting over 300 members and a commitment to holistic athletic development.
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Community
Founded by Stefania Sperzagni, who remains the sole director, Libertas Gym & Basket has experienced remarkable growth in just ten years. The organization is affectionately known as the home of the “Tigrotte” and “Tigrotti” – its youth basketball teams – and provides a robust gymnastics section focused on health and fitness. “We are a great movement,” Sperzagni stated, highlighting the organization’s expanding influence. Currently, the club supports 120 young athletes in men’s and women’s minibasketball, 90 in the youth sector, and 100 dedicated to gymnastics.
A Multifaceted Approach to Sports Development
Managing such a large and diverse membership requires a dedicated team. Libertas Gym & Basket employs 25 coaches, instructors, and managers who oversee a wide range of activities. These include participation in basketball championships across all youth categories, from minibasketball to a women’s first team, as well as adult fitness programs encompassing gentle gymnastics, stretching, and total body workouts.
A Packed Schedule of Events and Tournaments
The organization’s calendar is brimming with initiatives. Currently underway is the third edition of “Tweety’s Smile,” a memorial event dedicated to Tatiana Acquavita, a beloved figure in the local basketball community. This quadrangular tournament will feature the club’s rookie Tigrotte team competing against Futurosa, Reyer Venezia, and Conegliano Ducks. December will see two pre-Christmas events: the Tigrotte festival on December 16th and a special event for all minibasketball players on December 19th, where participants will receive gifts sponsored by ToTo.
Looking ahead, the Under 14 team will travel to Ostia from December 27th to 30th to compete in the Mare di Roma Trophy, a prestigious national tournament they previously won in 2021 with their 2007 team. Plans for 2026 include continued participation in events both domestically and internationally. Registration for the AzzurraTeam Mountain Camp, open to athletes born between 2014 and 2018, will open on February 1st, with the camp taking place in Piani di Luzza from June 14th to 20th. During the Easter period, younger teams will travel to Gallipoli for the Caroli Cup, while the U14 and U18 teams will compete in a tournament in Vienna.
Innovation Through Partnership
Beyond tournaments and training, Libertas Gym & Basket is actively pursuing innovative approaches to athlete development. The organization has recently partnered with VitalizeDx, a Trieste-based biotech startup founded by neuroscientist Lavinia Alberi. VitalizeDx has developed a technology utilizing salivary diagnostics and artificial intelligence to prevent injuries and optimize athletic performance.
Libertas Gym & Basket operates as a family-oriented organization, welcoming participants from ages four to 99. The club’s success is also attributable to the support of sponsors including Bin Agenzia Assicurazioni, ToTo cooperative society, Bosco Supermarkets, Trattoria and Pizzeria Spetic, and Koki. This commitment to community and innovation positions Libertas Gym & Basket for continued growth and impact in the world of youth sports.
