Batelli bids farewell to Libya’s leaders and delivers his final message

Abdullah Batili conducted prior to handing over his duties as Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Libya; A final round of meetings with the most prominent political and military leaders in the country, accompanied by the Deputy UN Envoy, Stephanie Khoury, who will lead a transitional phase to manage the mission’s duties until a new envoy to Libya is named.

Batelli’s tour included the head of the National Unity Government, Abdel Hamid Al-Dabaiba, the head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Manfi, his two deputies, Musa Al-Koni and Abdullah Al-Lafi, the head of the Supreme Council of State, Mohamed Takala, Khalifa Haftar, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, Mohamed Al-Haddad.

The meetings dealt with the latest developments in the political file in Libya, and the efforts of the UN mission to advance the political process towards holding presidential and parliamentary elections, in accordance with fair and impartial laws. The causes of the Libyan crisis and the challenges facing achieving stability and peace were also reviewed.

During the meetings, Libyan officials expressed their appreciation for Batelli’s efforts throughout his work, stressing the importance of the UN mission continuing its role in supporting the political process and achieving the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and prosperity.

For his part, Batelli urged Libyan officials to cooperate and overcome differences to reach a political solution to the crisis.

In mid-April, Batelli submitted his resignation from his position, stating that international efforts would remain doomed to failure as long as Libyan officials “put their personal interests above the needs of their country.”
