Bavaria Launches New Center to Bolster Pandemic Preparedness, Tackle Long COVID

Bavaria is investing in a comprehensive new initiative to strengthen its defenses against infectious diseases and proactively prevent future pandemics, with a particular focus on understanding and addressing the lingering effects of Long COVID.

The recently established Bavarian Center for Preventive Infection Medicine (BZI) – described by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art (StWMK) as a “nationwide unique structure” – aims to connect all of the region’s university medical locations, university hospitals, and public health services. The center’s formation, announced shortly before the new year, represents a significant step toward a more coordinated and scientifically driven approach to public health.

A Unified Approach to Infection Control

According to Bavaria’s Science Minister Markus Blume, the BZI is designed to make the region “more resilient to future health risks.” He emphasized that infectious diseases – ranging from common respiratory illnesses to pneumonia and influenza – remain a constant threat. “We can protect people by applying research results quickly and rigorously – we think of the test tube and the hospital bed in the same line,” Blume stated. “Especially when it comes to preventing and combating infectious diseases, short distances and a focus on translation are crucial.”

The BZI will receive approximately three million euros annually to support the integration of Bavarian university medical centers and university hospitals specializing in infectious disease research. This funding will facilitate the rapid translation of scientific discoveries into practical healthcare solutions, improve vaccine understanding, and enable earlier risk identification.

Prioritizing Long COVID Research

Driven by the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BZI’s inaugural project centers on the systematic recording, detection, and research of Long COVID. This initiative will establish the Bavarian Long COVID Register (BAY-LCR) to investigate post-acute infection syndromes and provide crucial insights into this complex condition.

The center’s broader goals extend beyond immediate response, encompassing efforts to strengthen public acceptance of vaccinations through evidence-based communication. A dedicated data platform and study platform will be established to support these endeavors, with plans to create independent research groups in the future.

Three Pillars of Prevention

The BZI’s operations are structured around three core program areas:

  • Bavarian Surveillance Center (BaySurv): This component will focus on the continuous monitoring of relevant pathogens through modern molecular analysis and data evaluation.
  • Bavarian Vaccine Center (BayVak): This center will conduct research on vaccines, vaccination strategies, and clinical studies, alongside scientifically grounded communication regarding vaccination.
  • Bavarian Long COVID Register (BAY-LCR): As the BZI’s first cross-sectional project, this register will systematically record and scientifically investigate post-acute infection syndromes like Long COVID.

These three areas, according to the StWMK, will form the foundation for a coordinated and scientifically informed prevention strategy against infectious diseases throughout Bavaria. The BZI’s scientific leadership is provided by Prof. Oliver Kurzai of Würzburg (Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology) and Prof. Klaus Überla of Erlangen (Virological Institute – Clinical and Molecular Virology). The BZI’s central offices are located at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, with a secondary location at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The establishment of the BZI signals a proactive and unified approach to safeguarding public health in Bavaria, positioning the region to not only respond effectively to emerging threats but also to actively work towards preventing the next pandemic.
