Bavaria Launches New Center to Prevent Future Pandemics, Tackle Long COVID

Bavaria is investing heavily in a new, comprehensive approach to infectious disease prevention and research, aiming not only to prepare for future health crises but to actively prevent them. The state government announced the establishment of the Bavarian Center for Preventive Infectious Medicine (BZI) today, a unique initiative that will link all university medical locations and hospitals across the region.
Bavaria’s Science Minister emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, “Our goal is not only to be as prepared as possible – but to prevent the next pandemic.” The center’s creation comes as the world continues to grapple with the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which remains a “massive concern.”
A Unified Approach to Infectious Disease
The BZI represents a significant step forward in Germany’s public health infrastructure. It will function as a central scientific facility, networking Bavarian university medical centers, university hospitals, and the public health service. This collaborative structure, officials say, is unprecedented in the country and is designed to accelerate the translation of research findings into practical healthcare solutions.
The center will receive approximately three million euros in annual funding, supporting research, diagnostics, and evidence-based advice for policymakers and the public. A key focus will be on reducing the time lag between scientific discovery and real-world application – bridging the gap “from the test tube to the hospital bed,” as one official explained.
Three Pillars of Prevention
The BZI’s work will be organized around three core program areas:
- Bavarian Surveillance Center (BaySurv): This component will provide continuous monitoring of relevant pathogens through molecular analysis and data evaluation.
- Bavarian Vaccine Center (BayVak): Researchers will focus on vaccine development, vaccination strategies, clinical trials, and public communication regarding vaccination.
- Bavarian Long COVID Register (BAY-LCR): As its first major cross-sectional project, the BZI will systematically record and investigate post-acute infection syndromes, including the increasingly prevalent Long COVID.
These three areas will work in concert to create a coordinated and scientifically grounded prevention strategy for Bavaria. The center also plans to establish a dedicated data platform and study platform, as well as support the formation of independent research groups.
Addressing the Long-Term Impact of COVID-19
The decision to prioritize Long COVID research underscores the lasting impact of the pandemic. The BZI’s Long COVID Register will be crucial for understanding the scope of the condition, identifying risk factors, and developing effective treatments. This initiative reflects a growing global recognition of the need to address the chronic health challenges that can follow acute infections.
The BZI’s scientific leadership includes Prof. Dr. Oliver Kurzai from Würzburg and Prof. Dr. Klaus Überla from Erlangen. The center’s main office is located at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, with a secondary location at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
