On March 15, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the administrator of the UN Development Program, Achim Steiner, who is visiting Azerbaijan to participate in the XI Global Baku Forum.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reported this to Day.Az on Saturday.

It was noted that the meeting discussed the cooperation agenda within the UN Development Programme, current prospects, issues arising from the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), as well as the regional situation in the post-conflict period.

“Jeyhun Bayramov, speaking about the positive results of long-term cooperation between the UN Development Program and Azerbaijan, noted the importance of continuing the existing partnership.

Speaking about the preparatory work related to COP29, the minister noted that our country is conducting a substantive negotiation process with various parties for the successful implementation of the COP29 presidency, and is also taking the necessary organizational measures.

Touching upon the topic of restoration work, as well as the peaceful efforts undertaken by our country in the post-conflict period, the minister noted that the massive mining of our territories by Armenia, as well as the refusal of this country to provide information about mined territories, threaten the life and health of our citizens, as well as the ongoing restoration work. The need to mobilize international efforts in mine clearance was emphasized.

Achim Steiner noted that Azerbaijan’s achievements in the field of development are exemplary. It was noted that the UN Development Program attaches great importance to the fight against the mine threat, including the discussion of initiatives in this direction.

A. Steiner also mentioned that the position and approach demonstrated by Azerbaijan as the chairman of COP29, better known as a country rich in hydrocarbon resources, deserves praise, and wished successful chairmanship in this direction.

During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed,” the department said in a statement.
