England’s Test head coach Brendon McCullum has branded misconceptions about his team’s playing style as “disrespectful” to the players and support staff.
McCullum, who took the helm of England’s Test side in 2022 alongside captain Ben Stokes, inherited a team that had a dismal record of one win in 17 matches. Under their guidance, the team has cultivated a reputation for a daring and aggressive brand of cricket. However, McCullum dislikes the term “Bazball.”
“We never have that kind of mindset about ourselves,” McCullum told the For the Love of Cricket podcast. “I think there’s a bit of a misconception about how we play…we try to take wickets and then we go for a round of golf and a few beers.”
He added he finds it “slightly disrespectful” to categorize their hard work so simply.
Mindset Over Method
McCullum recently urged players to exhibit “humility” after comments sparked debate, some interpreting them as a lack of concern for winning.
Ben Duckett said a 3-0 loss to India was insignificant if thay won the Champions Trophy. Harry Brook remarked, “if you get caught somewhere on the boundary, then who cares?”
McCullum clarified his message centers on players’ mindset, not a specific style or high scoring rates.
“For us,it’s about creating an environment that allows you to handle the pressures of international cricket,” McCullum explained. “You want your talent to come out.”
He emphasized players must avoid “tension and negativity.”
