UCLA gymnastics, currently ranked ninth nationally, is prioritizing precision and refinement as they prepare for a demanding season, with aspirations of challenging for a national championship. Early Season Tests Reveal Areas for Growth
The Bruins recently concluded a challenging quad meet in Utah, finishing third behind defending national champion Oklahoma and No.2 Louisiana State. According to UCLA coach Janelle mcdonald, this early-season competition served as a crucial benchmark. “ItS a really good test early in the season to have great competition across the board at a meet but also to be able to kind of see where you’re at and where we need to continue to build, to,” she stated. The team is now focused on meticulous attention to detail, particularly in routines and landings, as they prepare for their home opener against Nebraska at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday.
Mindset Shift Fuels Pursuit of Perfection
McDonald emphasized a shift in the team’s mental approach. “That’s really where our mindset is at,” she explained. “We want to continue to learn and grow from the things that we’ve already experienced and really put in the work to be the best team that we’re capable of being.” This commitment to continuous enhancement is particularly importent given the team’s youth, with McDonald aiming to maximize competitive experience for her freshmen.
Chiles Leads with Confidence and Team Focus
senior star Jordan Chiles is a key component of UCLA’s championship ambitions. Chiles, currently the top-ranked gymnast in the nation, recently earned her second consecutive Big Ten gymnast of the Week honor after achieving an all-around score of 39.575 in Utah. Despite her individual accolades, Chiles remains steadfastly focused on team success. “She loves that she gets to do the sport she loves with the people that have her back every step of the way,” McDonald shared.
Chiles’ dedication extends beyond the gym; she recently finished third on ABC’s “Dancing with the stars” while concurrently maintaining her rigorous training schedule with the team. This commitment underscores her unwavering dedication to both personal growth and collective achievement.
A Team built on Talent and Personal Connection
Chiles expressed strong confidence in the team’s potential. “The talent that I see during practices is just remarkable,” she said. “Every girl has their own way of showcasing that and it’s cool to know that our personalities and our talents get to collide together because it’s magical in the gym.” The team’s dynamic, she believes, is a powerful force. “We’re going to keep pushing and keep pushing.”
McDonald attributes the team’s rapid development to a personalized coaching approach centered on open dialogue with each gymnast. She noted significant improvements in how the team manages nerves, warmups, and mutual support from week one to week two of competition.

after finishing second in the nation last season, UCLA is determined to elevate their performance. Chiles articulated the team’s unwavering resolve: “Ther’s fuel in my body that I just want the world to understand that the Bruins didn’t come to play this year.” she added, “It’s just a matter of time when that spark is going to finally ignite and people are gonna be very shocked. We are just showing you bits and pieces with every meet that you see, but when it’s time to really shine and go out there and do what we need to do, we’re gonna do it.”
