Electric vehicle owners, be careful. Attempts at “quishing”, which consists of stealing your personal or banking details via a fraudulent QR code, are now affecting electric charging stations, reports France Info.

At the end of December, a charging station for electric cars was targeted by crooks in Lorris (Loiret). A QR code had been stuck on the terminal, instead of the one allowing users to access the payment platform to recharge their vehicle. Fortunately, the scam was quickly spotted and reported to the town hall.

A foreign website

“Our service provider was very responsive, and the terminal was immediately deactivated to avoid an increase in victims,” explained the mayor, Valérie Martin, to The Central Republic. According to her, only small amounts were taken, and the charging station was quickly put back into service.

The fraudulent QR code linked to a website abroad. The scammers had done things well, imitating the terminal payment platform to deceive their victims and even putting a limit on the amounts to be paid.

This type of scam is becoming more and more common in France. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of QR codes has become widespread in many areas, making phishing attempts all the easier. It is therefore always recommended to check the URL of the website to which a QR code links before entering personal information.
