Seoul Zoo Faces Scrutiny Over Animal Welfare After Bear Displays Distressing Behavior

A recent civil complaint has brought renewed attention to animal welfare concerns at Seoul Children’s Grand Park, sparked by reports of a bear exhibiting signs of severe psychological distress. The complaint, filed with the Seoul Metropolitan Government on November 11th, alleges inadequate conditions for animals and highlights the urgent need for improvements to their living environments.

Complaint Details Disturbing Behavior

According to the complainant, who recently visited the zoo, multiple animals – including elephants and bears – were observed engaging in stereotypical behavior, repetitive actions often indicative of stress and psychological distress in captive animals. The most alarming observation was a bear repeatedly banging its head against a wall. “It was unfortunate and shocking that the bear in particular was constantly banging its head against the wall,” the complainant stated.

The complainant further explained that research revealed this behavior to be a potential sign of a mental illness stemming from the extreme stress of confinement. The individual hopes the zoo will prioritize reducing stress for its animal population.

Zoo Acknowledges Facility Shortcomings, Outlines Welfare Efforts

Seoul Children’s Grand Park acknowledged existing deficiencies in its facilities but emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance animal welfare. A senior official stated the zoo currently implements programs focused on behavioral enrichment and positive reinforcement training.

Addressing the issue of stereotypical behavior, the official explained that while it is a difficult condition to fully resolve once established, the zoo actively works to minimize its occurrence. These efforts include daily enrichment activities, encouraging diverse behaviors, providing specialized diets tailored to animal preferences, and conducting regular health checkups.

Future Plans Include Ambitious Zoo Redevelopment

Looking ahead, the zoo announced plans to accelerate its redevelopment project, originally slated to begin after 2030. The goal is to transform the zoo into an ecological zoo centered on children’s education, creating a more stimulating and enriching environment for the animals. “We will improve it into an ecological zoo centered on children’s education and create a zoo in the city where animals are happy,” the official added.

The zoo’s commitment to animal welfare, coupled with its ambitious redevelopment plans, signals a potential turning point for animal care in Seoul Children’s Grand Park.
