Oregon State Women’s Golf Secures Top 5 Finish at San Diego State Classic

A strong performance from senior Kyra Ly propelled the Oregon State women’s golf team to a fifth-place finish at the San Diego State Classic, marking a successful start to their spring season. The Beavers concluded the 54-hole tournament at The Heights Golf Club in San Diego, California, on Tuesday.

The Oregon State squad finished with a total score of 17-over 881 (289-295-297) in the 12-team field. This result sets a positive tone as they look ahead to the remainder of their spring schedule.

Ly Leads the Charge with Sixth-Place Showing

Kyra Ly was the standout performer for Oregon State, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a 1-under 215 (68-74-73). Her impressive tournament included a remarkable 12 birdies – tied for the fourth-most in the entire field. This performance further solidifies Ly’s place in Oregon State history.

With 12 career Top 10 finishes, Ly is now fourth all-time among Beavers, trailing only Kathleen Takaishi (16), Ellie Slama (14), and Danielle Mitchell (13). Ly has demonstrated remarkable consistency this season, earning four Top 10 finishes in just 15 rounds, with 10 of those rounds played under par. Her only result outside the Top 10 came at the Nanea Invitational, where she tied for 11th.

Nakaoka Continues Impressive Freshman Campaign

True freshman Kate Nakaoka continued to impress, securing her third career Top 20 finish with a tie for 17th place. Nakaoka carded a 3-over 219 (73-71-75), highlighted by a 1-under 71 in the second round – her fourth sub-par score in 15 collegiate rounds. Prior to this event, Nakaoka had already achieved a tie for fourth place at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and 13th place at the Leadership and Golf Invitational.

Consistent Play from Alevag and Solid Contributions from Nakao and Hope

Clara Alevag showcased consistency throughout the tournament, carding a 3-over 75 in each of the three rounds to finish in a tie for 27th place with a 9-over 225. The sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, recorded seven birdies during the competition.

Raya Nakao and Kelly Hope both finished in a tie for 37th place at 11-over 227. Nakao’s scores were 78-75-74, while Hope finished with rounds of 73-77-77. Notably, Hope achieved an eagle during the tournament, becoming one of nine players in the field to do so.

Cal State Fullerton Claims Team Title

Cal State Fullerton secured the team title with a dominant 12-under 852, while Katharina Zellinger of the Titans claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 207.

The Beavers will now enjoy a two-week break before competing at the Bruin Wave Invitational, scheduled for February 23 and 24 at the Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita, California.
