Beeple’s Robotic Dogs ‘Poop Out’ NFTs at Art Basel Miami Beach

A provocative installation by digital artist Beeple is generating buzz at Art Basel Miami Beach, offering a commentary on art, technology, and celebrity culture – and it’s available for viewing through Sunday.
Mike Winkelmann, the artist known as Beeple, has once again positioned himself at the forefront of the art world with his latest project, “Regular Animals.” The installation features a series of $100,000 robotic dogs, each sporting a hyper-realistic head modeled after prominent figures including tech billionaires Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, as well as iconic artists Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.
AI, Robotics, and a Unique Distribution Method
The robotic canines are confined to a plexiglass enclosure where they utilize chest-mounted cameras to capture images. These images are then processed by artificial intelligence (AI) and, in a deliberately provocative act, “essentially pooped out” as prints, according to reports. Of the resulting prints, 256 contain QR codes granting collectors access to a free NFT, distributed in packaging labeled “Excrement Sample.”
Beeple himself is included among the canine representations, a decision he described as “ballsy.” Remarkably, the self-portrait dog was the first to be sold, a result that even surprised the artist.
A Return to the Spotlight After the NFT Boom
This project marks a significant moment for Winkelmann, recalling his previous claim to art world fame. In 2021, his digital collage sold for $69 million at Christie’s, a sale widely credited with accelerating the NFT boom that peaked the following year before experiencing a substantial downturn.
The installation at Art Basel serves as a pointed reflection on the volatile nature of the digital art market and the enduring fascination with celebrity and technology. It raises questions about the value of art in the digital age and the role of AI in creative processes.
