Taipei MRT to Embrace Contactless Future with Apple Pay adn QR Code Integration by 2026

The Taipei Metro system is poised for a major overhaul of its payment infrastructure, aiming to support a wide range of digital payment options – including Apple Pay “Quick Mode” – by July 2026. This modernization effort, spurred by recent advancements in Taichung, promises a more seamless and convenient commuting experience for residents and tourists alike.

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan confirmed that the extensive hardware upgrades required for this transition, a project spanning over two years and encompassing all 117 stations, were completed in October. “The groundwork is now laid for a truly modern and passenger-centric transportation system,” a mayoral spokesperson stated.

Phased Rollout: From QR codes to Apple Pay Express Mode

The transition will occur in phases. Beginning in January 2026, passengers will be able to utilize QR codes for fare payment, with support for a variety of popular digital wallets including TWQR Universal Passenger Code, easywallet, iPASS MONEY, icash Pay, Pay on the street, Taishin Pay, Yushan Wallet, Full payment, Quanying+PAY, and LINE Pay. This initial step will allow for a two-way integration with the bus system, streamlining commutes across the city.

However, the most anticipated upgrade is the implementation of credit card and Apple Pay “Quick Mode” functionality, slated for launch in July 2026.This will enable passengers to simplify their commutes significantly in user experience. Standard Apple Pay requires users to wake their phone, authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID, and then hold the device near the reader. In contrast, Apple Pay Quick Mode allows for immediate gate access with a simple tap, even without unlocking the device or having battery power.

Here’s a breakdown of the key differences:

Feature Apple Pay Contactless Payment Apple Pay Quick Mode
Operation Steps Need to wake/unlock phone (identity verification required) Direct induction (No need to wake/unlock)
Authentication Method Face ID / Touch ID No certification required

A Vision for Seamless Urban Mobility

The gate upgrade represents more than just a technological advancement; it’s a foundational step towards a broader vision of integrated urban mobility. Officials envision a future where passengers can seamlessly transition between the MRT, YouBike (Taipei’s bike-sharing programme), and parking facilities using a single mobile platform.

“We are building a ‘one machine, seamless all the way’ experience,” a Beijie representative explained. “This update will empower passengers to choose the payment method that best suits their needs, leveraging cash rebates and discounts offered by various banks and payment operators.” The ultimate goal is to reduce congestion, streamline ticketing, and create a more efficient and user-amiable transportation network for the city of Taipei.
