On August 10, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office released a white paper stating that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has always regarded complete reunification of the motherland as “its unwavering historical task”reaffirming that “Taiwan is part of China, that’s a fact”.
The white paper blames the current tension between the two sides of the Strait of Formosa on the Taiwanese authorities, in particular the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) whose quest for“independence” of the island would have “jeopardized peace and stability” in the strait. The text describes the PDP as“barrier that needs to be removed” in the process of peaceful reunification.
The document states that peaceful reunification under the regime of“one country, two systems” (the same doctrine applied in Hong Kong) is the best way to achieve reunification. He nevertheless warns that Beijing “will never give way to any form of secessionist activities for ‘Taiwan independence’”.
