Belém, capital of Pará and headquarters of COP30, the UN conference on climate change that will take place in 2025, ranks tenth among the capitals with the highest percentages of the population living in inadequate sanitation conditions. The situation of precarious basic sanitation is a reality in several municipalities in the North and Northeast.

According to new data from the 2022 Demographic Census published last Friday (23) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), there are 212,370 inhabitants of Belém who live with inadequate sanitation. Asked about this, the Mayor’s Office of Belém stated, in relation to waste disposal in the city, that, with a new tender already concluded, it plans improvements in the “management of urban solid waste 14 years late.” For its part, the Government of Pará mentions new investments and works to improve services.

The number of inhabitants with inadequate sanitation represents just over 16% of the population of the capital of Pará, which, in 2025, will host political and civil society leaders from around the world for another UN conference that seeks to stop the climate catastrophe, increasingly evident in the extreme events already occurring in parts of the world. The category of “inadequate”, according to the Census nomenclature, refers to drainage systems through rudimentary pits or holes, ditches, rivers, lakes, streams and other various forms.

The classification is also used for homes where there is no bathroom or toilet. The situation is not new and is one of the causes of concern in relation to the infrastructure for the COP30 in Belém, which will mark ten years of the Paris Agreement. At the summit, the new NDCs (acronym for nationally determined contributions) will be presented, which are the greenhouse gas reduction goals of each country.
