The image,featured on the front page of The Minnesota Star Tribune on Friday,has quickly become a defining symbol of the ongoing and increasingly forceful ICE presence in Minneapolis-a stark illustration of alleged excessive force and impunity.
This incident is not isolated. In the past 18 days, federal agents have used excessive force against numerous people in Minneapolis, resulting in two deaths: Renee Good and, more recently, Alex Pretti. Ther’s also the photograph of a 5-year-old boy being detained outside his home, and video footage of an agent pursuing a teenager through the snow, the boy shouting “I’m legal” in Spanish. Pretti, an ICU nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital, was pepper-sprayed, knocked to the ground, and shot at least 10 times while agents reportedly removed a legally permitted gun from his person. (Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino has asserted that the agents were the “real victims” and were acting in self-defense.)
