LONDON – More than two decades after the beloved 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham took the world by storm, a sequel is officially in the works.
Director Gurinder Chadha confirmed she is developing a follow-up to the hit movie that launched the careers of Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra.
The new film is slated for release in 2027, marking the 25th anniversary of the original Bend It Like Beckham. It will also coincide with the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“We’ve been part of changing the game for women,” Chadha told the BBC, explaining the inspiration behind revisiting the story. “So it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters.”
Chadha revealed that she’d received requests for a sequel “almost twice a week” since the original film’s release. The 2002 film was made on a budget of $7.2 million and became a global box office success, grossing around $120 million worldwide.
