Glowing Orb Sparks Curiosity on Bern’s Kirchenfeld Bridge

A captivating light installation has transformed the Kirchenfeld Bridge in Bern, Switzerland, drawing attention and speculation from residents and social media users alike.

A large, illuminated sphere, resembling a planet, has recently been suspended over the Kirchenfeld Bridge, quickly becoming a focal point for the city. The installation has ignited a flurry of online discussion, with many initially wondering if it was a reference to the local legend of the “Venus of Bümpliz.” This playful speculation stems from an allusion to the popular song “W. Nut from Bümpliz” by the Bernese band, Patent Ochsner.

The “Venus” Revealed: A Collaborative Art Project

However, the mystery has been solved. According to a media release, the luminous orb is, in fact, a temporary art installation created through a partnership between Remimag Gastronomie AG and the Lucerne Light Festival Association. The project aims to create a striking visual landmark.

“We wanted to create a bright eye-catcher that is visible from afar and arouses emotions,” stated a representative from Remimag Gastronomie AG. The company, which operates several restaurants in Bern including the Röschtigrabe brasserie, the Röschtigrabe restaurant, “toi et moi,” and the Hülsenmätteli, views the installation as a successful campaign.

Illumination Schedule and Duration

The “Venus” will remain suspended above the Kirchenfeld Bridge until January 10th, offering a nightly spectacle for passersby. The installation will be illuminated each evening between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., providing a shining beacon for the city.

While the installation is not located in the Bümpliz district, its impact is being felt throughout Bern, prompting conversations about the role of public art and light installations in urban spaces. The project underscores the power of art to capture the public imagination and transform familiar landscapes.
