The match on Vienna’s Center Court could not have started better for Almaty’s reigning champion, Karen Khachanov. En route to title number three this year, the 28-year-old Russian began his third quarter-final at the Stadtpark with plenty of confidence. The winner of the Open Generali in Kitzbühel did not have much to counter the confident start of his opponent. And after two breaks, Berrettini had to overcome a 0-1 deficit in 37 minutes.
It was clear in the two rounds of 16 games that both players like to play three series games. In the second set, the 28-year-old Italian was allowed to start serving. With more straight points and a stable first serve, it looked like the Austrian favorite could turn the match in his favour.
Berrettini’s first break chance in the last game of the match
However, the first break chance of the quarterfinal duel (from the Italians’ point of view) was still a long way from coming. Quite the opposite: Berrettini had to accept the third drop of service at 4:4.
The Kitzbühel winner was unable to get his first two (and only chances) of the match at 4:5 and 40:15, which Khachanov was able to defend with two confident serves. After 1:18 minutes, the Russian won his first victory against Berrettini on the ATP Tour. The champion of Almaty started the match against the Italians with a score of 0:4 H2H.
