New Delhi: Bhagwant Singh Mann has been sworn in as the first Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief minister of Punjab in a grand ceremony in Khatkar Kalan, the birthplace of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Dressed in a yellow turban, white kurti and blue coat, Bhagwant was greeted by the ranks as Inquilab Zindabad.

Purohit was administered the oath of office by Governor Banwarilal. The oath was taken in Punjabi.

Chief Minister Bhagwant said that AAP MLAs should never be arrogant.

‘We must respect those who do not vote for us. The government will give priority to solving the problems of unemployment, corruption and farmers. Work will start from today. Not a single day is wasted. The government will improve the quality of schools and hospitals as the Delhi government has done. I thank the people of Punjab and Arvind Kejriwal. ‘

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal was the special guest at the function.

The 50-acre venue and auditorium were packed with party workers by 9am.

Due to the delay in arriving at the venue including Kejriwal, the function which was scheduled to be held at 12.30 pm started at 1.25 pm. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Health Minister Satyender Jain, AAP Punjab’s Jarnail Singh and Raghav Chadha were also present. Bhagwant Singh’s sons Seerat and Dilshan came from the US to attend the swearing – in ceremony. His ex-wife Inderpreet Kaur in the US responded that he had always prayed for Bhagwant Singh’s victory and that it would continue. The couple divorced in 2015.
