The US was wrong in claiming that Iraq had nuclear weapons. This opinion was expressed by the current President of the United States, Joe Biden, in an interview with CNN, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
“In my view, it made no sense to think that Iraq had nuclear weapons,” Biden said, recounting his conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Biden noted that the United States, in his opinion, made several political mistakes. In addition to Iraq, he mentioned Afghanistan, which “was pointless” to try to unite.
Suspicion that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction became the formal reason for the invasion of Iraq by the international coalition of the United States and its allied countries in 2003. The war led to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime and long-term destabilization of the region. The operation was not approved by the UN and caused discontent in the international community. No weapons of mass destruction were found.
The occupation of Afghanistan by the United States and NATO lasted from 2001 to 2021.
