Who is Chris Koons?

‘The eyes and ears of President Joe Biden.’

The New York Times (NYT) gave this assessment of Chris Coons, a Democratic senator from Delaware. He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1963 and grew up in Hockessin, Delaware. He graduated from Amherst College (chemistry, political science), Yale Divinity School (ethics), and Law School, and is a lawyer.

Congressman Coons was interested in Africa from his youth. He spent a semester at the University of Nairobi in Kenya during his undergraduate years. After graduating from college, he worked with the South African Council of Churches to oppose apartheid in South Africa.

Congressman Coons first met President Biden when he was an intern in his office while he was a senator. He has been a close associate of President Biden for over 30 years. He entered the national political arena when President Biden took over the Delaware Senate seat when he served as Vice President in the Barack Obama administration. He has been re-elected three times since 2010.

After President Biden was elected in the 2020 presidential election, Rep. Coons emerged as a strong candidate for Secretary of State. However, President Biden personally asked Rep. Coons to remain in Congress, saying, “We need you in the Senate.” In fact, Rep. Coons was called President Biden’s confidant in the Senate, passing major bills such as the Infrastructure Act and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) while moving back and forth between the ruling and opposition parties. Rep. Coons also maintained a close relationship with candidate Harris, taking the lead in escalating the crisis that Vice President Harris faced over the controversy surrounding border policy in the early days of the Biden administration.

He has taken a hard-line stance toward North Korea. Rep. Coons has opposed inter-Korean economic cooperation ahead of denuclearization, saying, “Relief of sanctions on North Korea should be done when there is substantial progress toward verifiable, irreversible denuclearization (CVID).”
