US President Joe Biden is personally interested in reaching agreements on a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian radical movement Hamas, as he views it as an important element of his domestic and foreign policy. This was reported by the Axios portal, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
According to him, senior aides to the US leader consider the deal, which is being discussed, the only way to achieve a ceasefire and the key to ending the conflict, which provoked a wave of criticism against Biden in the run-up to the presidential elections. They also hope the truce will help calm student protests at American universities against the administration’s policies in the Middle East, as well as improve the president’s tarnished reputation among Arab voters in swing states such as Michigan.
Biden, according to the publication, intends to do everything possible to conclude a truce, which, according to his aides, will delay the Israeli military operation in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip or completely remove it from the agenda. Officials are convinced that it will also solve the problem of hunger in the enclave.
A temporary ceasefire, writes Axios, will allow negotiations to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel to resume. Reaching Saudi-Israeli agreements could convince Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to give the green light to the creation of a Palestinian state, which, as the portal notes, would be a major victory for Biden on the eve of the elections.
The White House also believes that Israel’s deal with Hamas will reduce tensions in other parts of the region. We are talking about attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and the aggravation of the situation on Israel’s border with Lebanon.
Earlier, Egypt handed over to Hamas an initiative agreed with the Israeli side, which involves the release of 20 to 40 hostages held in the Gaza Strip in exchange for a ceasefire. A Hamas delegation is expected to arrive in Cairo to present its response to the latest ceasefire proposal to the Egyptian side. According to a source from the Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya TV channel, an agreement between Hamas and Israel will most likely be reached “within the next few days, even despite some reservations.”
