America risks “falling into chaos”. The midterm elections of 8 November are different from all the others: “This time the same democracy is at stake.” Joe Biden raises the volume of his electoral campaign to the maximum, trying to reverse the trend that seems favorable to the Republicans.

But these words, spoken on Wednesday night, November 2, at the Columbus club in Washington, set the stage for the next move: Biden will stand for a second term in 2024. On several occasions the president had hinted that he would announce his decision after next week’s election date. In fact, he has already formed his own electoral committee, entrusting it to Jen O’Malley Dillon, the deputy to the White House chief of staff, Ron Klain. Jen, 47, spearheaded Biden’s campaign in 2020 after trying to get former Texas congressman Beto O ‘Rourke’s candidacy in the Democratic primaries off the ground.

Barring surprises, the move by Biden, 80 on Nov. 20, should automatically knock out potential suitors from the Democratic Party’s vast core area, starting with Vice President Kamala Harris. On the other hand, the scenario to the left of the party is more open. Senator Bernie Sanders, 81, would be considering challenging again, and this would be the third time, the representative of the progressive establishment. We will see if fresh forces will also come forward in the coming months.

On the other side, however, the only expectation is the formal announcement of Donald Trump, who could find difficult opponents already in the Republican primaries, such as the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis.

At the moment, therefore, the most likely scenario is that of a new clash between Biden and Trump. Here then is the president in office attacking his predecessor across the board. Trump is directly responsible, the moral instigator of the wave of threats, of violence that is sweeping American politics. Biden recalled the hammer assault on Paul Pelosi and of course the riots of January 6: “American democracy is under siege because the defeated former president refuses to accept the 2020 result … This ‘Big Lie’ is at the root of the violence and intimidation of the last two years”.

A recent survey conducted by Common Good with Emerson College Polling indicates that for one third of Americans “political violence is sometimes justified.” Biden, however, is convinced that “for the vast majority of citizens there should be no room” for abuse, bullying, illegality. The problem, however, is that the Trumpians of “Maga” (Make America great again “), despite being in the minority, are the” driving force “of the Republican party. “More than 300 candidates” will be presented at the next elections who propagate the “Big Lie”. And Biden fears that, in the event, they will not even recognize their own defeat, sowing “chaos and discord.” Conclusion: “The battle we are in is a battle for democracy, for the soul of America.”
