The DT of the Uruguayan team, the Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, held a controversy with the local press this Saturday regarding the historic strikers Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, days before the start of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
In a press conference, the Rosario explained: “I have not spoken with Suárez or Cavani, for this reason I was publicly described as a liar. I have not spoken with them, because the information that was made public is that I have lied to the Uruguayans saying that I was going to speak and I have not spoken with them.
“Actually I have not spoken with them,” he insisted. I have a lot of regard for players who acquire the idol dimension. First, because reaching that position is not for everyone and it is always deserved and Suárez and Cavani are two idols, ”he added.
In a long explanation on the subject, Bielsa indicated that after his first press conference, Cavani “expressed that his time in the national team had not ended and he did so publicly and Suárez expressed that his time in the national team had not ended.”
In a vehement way, Bielsa clarified: “It is impossible for me to decide that the cycle of a player like Luis Suárez is finished. I would withdraw a player from the national team from no country. Here the player plays for the love of the shirt, he does not play for money. How am I going to allow myself to eliminate the little that football has left of value that is to play for nothing more than the love of the shirt? When the world says that it is disgusted by what is happening with the money-soccer relationship, the selection of a country appears as a virgin scenario. It is not contaminated by money (yet) and that is why it suffers the postponements it suffers, because the football of the national teams is absolutely postponed ”.
Bielsa expressed his anger with a sector of Uruguayan journalism: “I was publicly described as a liar; I have a lot of consideration for the players who acquire the dimension of idols, first, because reaching that position is not for everyone and it is always deserved; Nobody is an idol without deserving it and there are very few who reach that condition.
“The relationship that I take care of is with the players and the public, which interests me that they recognize me as a coherent person. That the footballers see me as a sincere person and that it does not affect them more than necessary, because when choosing, I privilege and discard. I want them to know that it is hard for me to decide and postpone the illusions of some who could have come. I respect the players and football, ”he expressed.
Finally, Bielsa specified that he made a reserve of players but that he will give the list on Monday, when the last game in the Uruguayan League and in leagues in other countries has finished.
“I am going to reserve and, after the last date, when I am sure that a player is not injured or that there is another impediment, I will inform the players that are actually called up,” he specified.
For the South American Qualifiers, Uruguay will face Chile on Friday, September 8 at the Centenario Stadium, at 8:00 p.m., and on Tuesday the 12th they will face Ecuador in Quito at 6:00 p.m.
