‘Big Bang Theory’ Universe Expands with HBO Max’s Greenlight for Sci-Fi Spinoff, ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’

HBO Max has officially ordered a new comedy series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, continuing the legacy of the beloved sitcom The Big Bang Theory with a decidedly sci-fi twist. The show, slated for the newly rebranded streaming platform, marks the first series pickup since the transition from Max completed on Wednesday.

A New Chapter for a Familiar Face

The series will center on Stuart Bloom, portrayed by Kevin Sussman, who was a recurring character throughout the original Big Bang Theory run. This spinoff distinguishes itself from previous iterations, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, by embracing a heavier science fiction element alongside its comedic core.

According to a company release, a senior official expressed excitement about continuing the narrative established by the original series. “Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn’t be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team.”

Creative Team Reunited

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe reunites Big Bang Theory co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady with Zak Penn, known for his work on Free Guy and Beacon 23. Lorre shared his ambition for the project, stating, “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about.”

The premise of the show involves Stuart Bloom accidentally triggering a multiverse Armageddon after damaging a device created by Sheldon and Leonard. He’s then tasked with restoring reality, aided by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and the ever-challenging Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) – all returning faces from The Big Bang Theory. The storyline promises encounters with alternate-universe versions of familiar characters.

A Collaborative and Enthusiastic Production

Prady emphasized the enjoyment of the writing process, noting, “The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I’m certain that joy will come through the screen. Putting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.”

Penn recounted a whimsical story about joining the project, stating he was “on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre.” He added, “I couldn’t resist that idea.”

Lorre, Prady, and Penn will serve as executive producers, with production handled by Lorre’s production company in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD U.S. Networks, affirmed the network’s commitment to the franchise. “Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with The Big Bang Theory, and we can’t wait to see the universe continue with this new series,” she said. “With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist.”

The expansion of The Big Bang Theory universe signals a continued appetite for the characters and humor that resonated with audiences for over a decade, now venturing into uncharted, sci-fi territory.
