Lars Eidinger Cast as Brainiac in James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’
A new villain has entered the DC Universe. Director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced Saturday that German actor Lars Eidinger will portray the iconic Brainiac in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to the forthcoming Superman film.
Gunn revealed the casting decision on his Instagram account, stating, “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top.” He extended a welcome to Eidinger, adding, “Welcome to the DCU, Lars.”
While Eidinger, 49, may not be a household name for many North American audiences, his extensive filmography includes roles in Babylon Berlin, All the Light We Cannot See, High Life, Tim Burton’s Dumbo, and the recent Netflix film Jay Kelly, alongside George Clooney and Adam Sandler. He is also a multifaceted artist, working as a rapper, musician, and DJ.
Man of Tomorrow will mark a significant milestone for the character of Brainiac, representing the first time the supervillain will be brought to life in live-action on the big screen. The film’s narrative will see Superman, played by David Corenswet, and his longtime adversary, Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, forming an unlikely alliance to defend Earth against the formidable threat of Brainiac.
Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, Brainiac first appeared in 1958’s Action Comics #242. Originally conceived as Vril Dox, a scientist from the planet Colu, the character has evolved into a highly intelligent, cyborg-like being. As explained by IGN, Brainiac’s core motivation revolves around the relentless pursuit and collection of knowledge, often achieved through the ruthless capture and miniaturization of entire cities.
“Brainiac’s fiendish modus operandi consists of travelling to different worlds and capturing cities as his personal souvenirs,” one analyst noted. “He shrinks them down and bottles them up for his collection, and then destroys what remains of the conquered civilization.” The city of Kandor, a remnant of Krypton, is frequently cited as one of Brainiac’s most prized possessions, and in some iterations of the Superman mythos, he is even responsible for Krypton’s destruction after stealing Kandor.
Production on Man of Tomorrow is slated to begin next year, with a theatrical release currently scheduled for July 9, 2027.
The casting of Eidinger has sparked considerable discussion among fans, eager to see his interpretation of the iconic villain. The DC Universe continues to expand, and the addition of Brainiac promises a compelling new chapter in the saga of Superman.
