BioWare Documentary Filmed During Studio’s Final Years Before Closure

Filming began two years before Electronic Arts closed BioWare on October 21, allowing a documentary crew to capture the final chapter of the legendary studio, Deadline reported.

Documenting Three Decades From Edmonton to Closure

Commissioned by Canada’s Super Channel, the feature documentary titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will trace how the Edmonton-based company grew from its founding in 1995 by three medical doctors—Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip—into a celebrated role-playing game developer that sold 100 million copies, Deadline reported.

The studio’s acclaimed role-playing catalog includes Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect, spanning every game from Shattered Steel to Dragon Age: The Veil Guard.

The film is written and directed by Akash Sherman and co-produced by Canada’s Fennessey Films and Score G Productions, which has worked on projects in the past like Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story, Dolph: Unbreakable, and Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo, Deadline reported.

Production began two years prior to the shutdown, giving the filmmakers rare, pre-closure access inside the studio, Tech Insider reported.

That timing altered the scope of the project, Tech Insider reported.

With the studio’s recent closure, the film is now a profound valediction, writer and director Sherman said in a statement, Yahoo reported.

Sherman added that the studio’s founders are his hometown heroes, noting it is a privilege and responsibility to share the journey of underdogs who came together to create deeply beloved storytelling whose golden era kindled a spark in him and an entire generation.

Electronic Arts shut down the studio on October 21, 2026, bringing development on the next Mass Effect game to an abrupt end and resulting in job cuts across the organization.

Reports noted that the restructuring cut about 400 jobs, which was roughly 3% of EA’s workforce, while about 50 staff members at BioWare were reportedly affected.

Following the closure, a leaked trailer for the next Mass Effect game found its way online.

In the wake of the shutdown, fans have been mobilizing to save Mass Effect by putting up billboards in places like Times Square and spraypainting graffiti on publisher EA’s office, alongside creating an e-petition advocating for the Canadian government to assist BioWare employees in acquiring the studio and its IP rights to operate independently.

Interviews Across BioWare’s History

The documentary features interviews with a roster of figures from the studio’s history, including co-founders Muzyka, Zeschuk, and Yip, Deadline reported.

Other gaming industry veterans appearing in the film include Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen, and Caroline Livingstone, alongside Jennifer Hale, the voice actress for the female variant of Commander Shepard, Kotaku reported.

Former EA executive John Riccitiello, LucasFilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly, and The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley also participated in interviews.

Keighley confirmed on X that he took part in the interviews for the project.

When the production team asked for our blessing to tell the BioWare story, we were honored and deeply moved,

Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, BioWare co-founders

BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about the stories brought to life by the amazing people on our dev teams, and the fans who defended those worlds, championed them and carried them forward. We’re proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again, Muzyka and Zeschuk added in their statement, Kotaku reported.

Festival Premiere and Worldwide Distribution

The film is planned for a major film festival run and world premiere in 2027, Deadline reported.

In addition to archival and interview footage, producers launched a website allowing community members to submit photos, videos, and personal stories for potential inclusion in the project, Deadline reported.

BioWare’s fans have been part of its journey since the very first game, co-producer Adam Scorgie said, Deadline reported.

It’s only right that they help us tell the rest of the story.

Kim Ball, EVP Content & Communications for Super Channel, noted the company’s thrill in bringing the project to Canadian audiences, while the film is set to premiere at film festivals sometime in 2027.

Whether the community petition and the efforts to acquire the studio and its intellectual property rights will change the outcome for the employees affected by the closure remains unaddressed by Electronic Arts.
