For this first weekend of the Christmas holidays, traffic will be particularly heavy on Saturday and Sunday in Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

This year, with the start of the Christmas holidays falling on the eve of New Year’s Eve, you will have to be patient this weekend if you take the road. Bison Futé anticipates a large number of traffic jams from Friday morning.

The day of Friday December 22 is thus classified orange in the direction of departures throughout France, and red in the Paris region and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. More generally, Bison Futé anticipates very dense traffic across the entire French network, particularly at the exit of large cities.

On the outskirts of Paris, the greatest difficulties are expected towards the various toll barriers, particularly on the A6 and A10 motorways. Departures on vacation or weekends will be added to the usual trips generated by economic activity, in particular work-home journeys. “Due to Christmas shopping, routes serving commercial areas will experience heavy traffic. The same is true for the commercial sectors of large cities», Points out the traffic information service.

Bison Futé advises leaving or crossing Île-de-France before 10 a.m., and avoiding the A7 motorway, between Lyon and Orange, from 12 p.m. to midnight. In particular, we expect traffic to be heavy from 10 a.m. at the Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines toll, on the A10, in the direction of departures, and saturated from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. On the A7, traffic will be heavy from 12 p.m. between Lyon and Orange, and saturated from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. On the A6, passing the Fleury-en-Bière toll will be complicated from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Difficulties are also announced in the middle of the afternoon on the A20 near Brive-la-Gaillarde. Furthermore, in terms of returns, Friday is classified orange in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and green in the rest of France.

Saturday December 23, traffic should still prove very difficult in the direction of departures. Île-de-France will always be classified red, and the rest of the territory will be orange. The only region where there will be signs of improvement: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, which will return to orange. At the national level, departures for the Christmas holidays will continue. Traffic will be difficult throughout the day. For returns, the day will be classified green everywhere, symbol of usual traffic.

For Saturday, Bison Futé advises leaving or crossing Île-de-France before 6 a.m., to avoid the A6 motorway, between Beaune and Lyon, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and to avoid the A7 motorway, between Lyon and Orange, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A calmer New Year’s Eve Sunday on the roads

Until Sunday, still due to Christmas shopping, the routes serving the commercial areas will experience heavy traffic. The same is true for the commercial sectors in the centers of large cities. Bison Futé therefore recommends “favor the use of public transport, as much as possible».

The roads will still regain their calm Sunday December 24 throughout France, including Île-de-France, where the forecasts are “green”, both in the direction of departures and returns. This is the ideal deal for those who want to leave at the last minute for Christmas Eve. As a reminder, this year, the Christmas holidays will begin on Saturday December 23, and children will not return to class until Monday January 8, 2024.
