“Flavanols exhibit an astringent taste,” explained Dr. Yasuyuki Fujii. “We hypothesized that this taste serves as a stimulus, transmitting signals directly to the central nervous system (comprising the brain and spinal cord). As an inevitable result, it is indeed thought that flavanol stimulation is transmitted via sensory nerves to activate the brain, afterward inducing physiological responses in the periphery through the sympathetic nervous system.” Their study, published in Current Research in Food Science, set out to test this idea.

The research team conducted experiments using 10-week-old mice.One group received oral doses of flavanols-either 25 mg/kg or 50 mg/kg of body weight-while a control group received distilled water. The results were striking. Mice that consumed flavanols demonstrated significantly higher levels of physical activity, increased exploratory behaviour, and improved performance in learning and memory tasks compared to the control group.
