Samsung’s Bixby Poised for Major AI Overhaul with ‘Bixby Live’ and Perplexity Integration

Samsung is preparing a significant upgrade to its Bixby virtual assistant, aiming to bring it closer to competitors like Google’s Gemini with features like “Bixby Live” and deeper integration with AI search engine Perplexity. Leaked details from a Reddit report analyzing the One UI 8.5 build reveal a sweeping set of changes designed to revitalize the often-underutilized assistant.

A recent discovery by a Redditor, first reported by SamMobile, has ignited speculation about the future of Bixby. The leaked information suggests Samsung is responding to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-powered assistants, seeking to offer a more robust and versatile experience for Galaxy device users.

Introducing ‘Bixby Live’: A Gemini-Inspired Interface

At the heart of the potential overhaul is “Bixby Live,” a feature strikingly similar to Google’s Gemini Live. When activated, the interface will reportedly feature a multi-colored strip along the edges of the phone’s display, with a central circle indicating the AI’s active state. Users will have immediate access to controls for muting the microphone, sharing camera access, and uploading content.

This new interface is a departure from Bixby’s previous iterations and signals a move towards a more visually engaging and readily accessible AI experience. One analyst noted that the design choice clearly aims to emulate the user-friendly aesthetic of Gemini Live.

Conversational Styles and AI-Generated Content

Beyond the visual changes, Samsung appears to be expanding Bixby’s capabilities with a range of “conversational styles.” A drop-down menu within the interface purportedly offers options such as “general agent,” “tour guide,” “storyteller,” and “interview,” allowing users to tailor Bixby’s responses to their specific needs.

The leaked build also showcases evidence of AI generation capabilities, with screenshots displaying a “content above was generated by AI” disclaimer. This indicates that Bixby will be able to create original content, further blurring the lines between virtual assistant and creative tool.

‘Circle to Ask’ and Enhanced Chatting Experiences

Samsung is also reportedly introducing “Circle to Ask,” a feature mirroring Google’s “Circle to Search.” This allows users to simply circle an item on their screen to initiate a search or request information about it.

Users will have two primary ways to interact with the upgraded Bixby: a dedicated app offering a chat thread experience akin to Gemini, and a semi-transparent window for quick queries directly from the home screen. The dedicated app promises a more immersive and detailed conversational experience.

Perplexity Integration for Complex Queries

Samsung has been actively testing integration with Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine known for its ability to provide comprehensive, web-backed answers. Leaks suggest Bixby will handle basic tasks, while leveraging Perplexity’s intelligence for more complex inquiries. A company release confirmed that Samsung was evaluating Perplexity’s responses to Bixby queries, indicating a serious commitment to this partnership.

Early Hints and the One UI 8.5 Timeline

While these changes were discovered within the One UI 8.5 test build, early signs of Samsung’s experimentation with Bixby’s interface surfaced as early as October. A social media post highlighted the development of a new pop-up bar for Bixby, featuring a colorful blue/purple color scheme that adapts to the user’s Light or Dark mode preference.

The impending release of One UI 8.5 is expected to deliver these enhancements to Galaxy device users, potentially transforming Bixby from a relatively obscure feature into a powerful and competitive AI assistant. The updates represent a significant investment by Samsung in the future of its virtual assistant, signaling a determination to remain at the forefront of the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
