New Delhi – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its list of candidates for the second phase of the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections. The list includes 39 individuals, with three Union Ministers amongst them. The Union Ministers who will be contesting in the elections are Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Patel, and Bhagan Singh Kulaste.

Narendra Singh Tomar, who is the Union Minister of State for Agriculture, will be seeking his constituency from Dhimani. Prahlad Patel, the Union Minister of State for Food Processing, will be contesting from Narasinghpur. Bhagan Singh Kulaste, the Minister of State for Regional Development, has chosen Niwas constituency.

The announcement of the candidate list came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally of BJP workers in Bhopal. However, there has been no indication yet of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s candidature.

In addition to the Union Ministers, three Members of Parliament (MPs) from the BJP have also made it to the candidate list. The MPs included are Uday Pradap Singh, Riti Pathak, and Ganesh Singh.

The Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, consisting of 230 seats, are scheduled to be held by the end of this year. In the previous 2018 elections, the Congress party won 114 seats, while the BJP secured 109 seats. With the support of independent MLAs, the Congress formed a cabinet under the leadership of Kamal Nath. However, internal disputes within the party eventually led to a faction led by Jyotiraditya Scindia defecting to the BJP in March 2020. As a result, the Congress lost its rule in the state and the BJP government, led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, came to power.
