In a significant development in the case of the killing of BJP leader Ramalingam, who was murdered for condemning the conversion of Hindus, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids in 21 places across nine districts, including Tanjore and Nellie. These raids were conducted to gather evidence related to the financial support given to the absconders involved in the case.

Ramalingam, a 45-year-old resident of Tiruphuvanam Upland, was known for running a kitchen utensil rental shop in Tirupur called ‘Tamil Catering Service’ and worked as a catering contractor. During his business trips to the villages around Thiruvananthapuram, he had voiced his concerns about Hindus being targeted for conversion.

A video of Ramalingam expressing his views on social media had further incited a mob against him. Threats were made against him, including cutting off his hands and a warning of imminent arrest. On February 5, 2019, after closing his shop, Ramalingam was intercepted by unidentified individuals who not only dismembered one of his hands but also brutally killed him.

Initially investigated by the local Thiruvidaimaruduar police, the case was transferred to the NIA for further investigation. Subsequently, it was revealed that the Popular Front of India (PFI), a now-banned organization, was responsible for the murder. As part of the investigation, 18 individuals were booked, out of which 13 were arrested and imprisoned.

The NIA is currently on the lookout for five absconders, including Abdul Majeed, Burhanuddin, Sahul Hameed, Nabeel Hassan, and Mohammed Ali Jinnah. A cash reward of 5 lakh rupees has been announced for any information leading to their whereabouts. Additionally, a charge sheet has been filed against the 18 accused in the special NIA court in Poontamalli, Chennai.

During the recent raids, NIA officials discovered evidence related to the sheltering and funding of the absconding murderers by PFI and STPI party functionaries and members of certain Muslim organizations. The raids, conducted in the early hours of the morning, resulted in the seizure of digital documents, mobile phones, bank transaction records, and more than 25 SIM cards and memory cards.

The NIA teams carried out searches at various locations, including the houses and offices of individuals involved in the murder. Some of the locations raided include the houses of Pakrudeen, District Secretary of STBI, Haja Alauddin, Mohammed Sharif, Ghulam Hussain, Mohammad Baroukh, Afzal Khan, Rashid Muhammad, Mubarak Badshah, and Abbas.

The raids also targeted the houses of Abdullah, who has passed away, in Thoravi, and Babu alias Naina Muhammad in Vriddhachalam. Additionally, the residence of SDPI State President Mubarak in Tirunelveli was raided, resulting in a gathering of over a hundred people who raised slogans against the central government. Strict police security was deployed to maintain peace.

The investigation carried out by the NIA officials has revealed that Ramalingam was killed in a ‘jihadi’ manner. The killers were dispatched from a location called Virakam in Theni, and the murder was conducted using the same modus operandi employed in the previous killings of prominent Hindu figures such as Veluar Valliyappan and BJP executive ‘Auditor’ Ramesh.

The NIA continues to actively pursue the absconders and gather additional evidence related to this high-profile case. The raids and investigation have drawn attention to the issue of religious conversions and the need for better security measures to protect individuals who express their views.
