New Zealand fast bowler Blair Tickner is expected to be sidelined for six to twelve weeks following a shoulder injury sustained during the second test against the West Indies, while spinner Ajaz Patel has been added to the squad for his first test match on home soil since February 2020. The injury will also likely rule Tickner out of New Zealand’s upcoming tour of India, which begins January 11 with five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.
Injury details and Recovery Timeline
Tickner suffered the injury while fielding, describing the incident as a routine dive that “just hit the ground a little bit differently.” Fortunately, the shoulder has been successfully relocated, and he has already begun rehabilitation. While the initial prognosis estimates a recovery timeframe of six weeks – perhaps allowing him to return by January 21 – Tickner is optimistic about a faster return.
“I’m already back in the gym, doing my rehab,” Tickner stated. “I feel like I’m playing good cricket, so I want to get back out there, but I obviously have to be safe. A lot of cricket to come.” He is aiming for a five-week recovery, hoping to rejoin Central Districts for the T20 Super Smash competition, which starts on Boxing Day.
Recent Performance and Impact of Absence
prior to the injury, Tickner was in strong form, having taken four wickets for 32 runs from 16 overs in the first innings of New Zealand’s recent test victory. His absence will be felt, particularly with the challenging tour of India looming.
The bowler acknowledged the frustration of leaving the field mid-performance. “I had four out of six [wickets] and I was looking for more, but it sort of happened in a split second,” he said.Despite the setback, he remains positive. “It popped out and wasn’t a great experience, but luckily, there’s not too much damage on the way out. So, [the shoulder is] back in place and back doing rehab and back doing some conditioning sessions. So, no, life could be worse.”
Patel Steps In, Black Caps Maintain Momentum
With Tickner unavailable, Ajaz Patel will take his place in the squad. this marks a significant prospect for the spinner to play a test match in New Zealand for the first time since February 2020.
