A dramatic melbourne Cup day at Flemington took a somber turn as veteran jockey Blake Shinn sustained a broken leg in a fall during the ninth race. The incident occurred shortly after Jamie Melham made history, becoming only the second female jockey to win the prestigious race aboard Half Yours.
Shinn was transported to a local hospital following the accident, which involved his mount, She’s Got Pizzazz, becoming entangled with two other horses. Paramedics provided immediate on-site treatment before transporting him via ambulance. Shinn later confirmed the extent of his injuries in a social media post, expressing gratitude that She’s Got Pizzazz was not seriously harmed. “Thank you all for your kind messages after my fall,” he wrote. “I’ve broken my leg adn will be sidelined for a bit,but I’m very grateful that She’s Got Pizzazz is okay.”
According to Racing Victoria, she’s Got Pizzazz suffered a “lame off fore” as a result of the incident. Shinn, a celebrated figure in Australian racing – having won the Melbourne Cup in 2008 on Viewed – received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow jockeys. Kerrin McEvoy, who secured victory in Race 9 on Dance to the Boom, told Channel 9, “Firstly, I just hope Blake Shinn is OK. You don’t like to see a riderless horse after a race.”
Multiple Suspensions Mar Cup Day
The day’s drama wasn’t limited to Shinn’s fall. Stewards handed down suspensions to three other jockeys following separate incidents. Jye mcneil received the most severe penalty – an 18-meeting suspension – for careless riding during the Melbourne Cup itself. Officials steadfast that McNeil interfered with both Stephane Pasqier on Presage Nocturne and Shinn on Vauban at the 2500m mark.
neil Farley was banned for seven meetings for breaching whip rules while finishing second on Pittsburgh Pirate in Race 2, with the suspension taking effect from November 6 to 11. John Allen faced two separate charges of careless riding, resulting in two bans: a 10-meeting suspension for his ride on Kaleo in Race 8 and an eight-meeting suspension for his ride on Windstorm in Race 10.Allen will be sidelined from November 7 to 24.
Horses Reportedly Recovering Well
Despite the incidents, officials reported that the horses involved were largely unharmed. Half Yours, who bled from the mouth after her historic win,was found to have sustained only a minor laceration to her left cheek. “A post race examination by the raceday veterinary team found that Half Yours had sustained a minor laceration to the inside of its left cheek,” a Victoria Racing statement confirmed. “The horse is fine and no veterinary treatment was required.”
Similarly, Buckaroo, trained by Chris Waller, who finished last in the Melbourne Cup, was reported to be recovering well after experiencing an episode of Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH), characterized by bleeding from the lungs. Chris Waller Racing shared an update on social media, stating,”Thanks for the well wishes and concerns in relation to Buckaroo. All of our runners have pulled up safe and here is Buckaroo having a pick of grass, back at the stables.”
