Switzerland to Expand Blood Donor Eligibility

Switzerland is poised to broaden its pool of eligible blood donors, a move that could alleviate ongoing concerns about supply. Starting February 1, individuals previously barred from donation due to receiving a blood transfusion, extended stays in the United Kingdom, or specific medical interventions will once again be able to contribute.
Easing Restrictions After Two Decades
The change, authorized by the Swiss Institute for Therapeutic Products Swissmedic, stems from a “complete risk assessment” conducted by the CRS Blood Transfusion Service, an independent institution of the Swiss Red Cross (CRS), on Tuesday. A four-month waiting period will apply after each transfusion, nonetheless of location. Those who spent meaningful time in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s will also regain eligibility.
The updated guidelines also address waiting periods following medical procedures. A one-year deferral will be required after neurosurgery performed in Switzerland.Individuals who received dental implants in Switzerland after 1993 will be cleared to donate after a minimum two-week delay, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
A Response to Evolving Risks
These revisions mark a significant shift from the rules in place for over 20 years. The previous restrictions were implemented due to concerns about the potential transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), frequently enough referred to as “mad cow disease,” through blood products. At the end of the last century, the risk of infection was considered elevated in Great britain.
However, to date, no cases of vCJD have been reported in Switzerland, and the risk of transmission via transfusion is now deemed extremely low. The CRS emphasizes that blood donations will continue to undergo rigorous selection and control processes, and this adaptation represents an “crucial step” forward.
