These spacecraft will investigate how radiation from the Sun impacts the magnetic environment of Mars, a factor scientists believe contributed to the planet’s atmospheric loss. The timing of this mission is unconventional, as launches to Mars typically occur every 26 months when planetary alignment minimizes travel time to approximately nine months. Though, the Escapade spacecraft are employing a novel trajectory, utilizing Earth’s gravity as a “slingshot” to accelerate the journey. If prosperous,this method could enable Mars travel at any time,eliminating the current two-year launch window.
