Blue Shield Launches “Promising Start” Program to Ease Financial Strain on New Parents
A new initiative from Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan aims to alleviate the financial pressures associated with welcoming a new child, providing crucial support to families in San Diego County.
Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, a managed care organization serving approximately 580,000 members across Los Angeles and San Diego counties through its Medi-Cal offerings, on Thursday unveiled the “Promising Start Program.” The program is designed to provide tangible assistance and encourage preventative healthcare for new parents during the critical first year of a baby’s life.
Addressing a Significant Financial Burden
The cost of raising a child can be substantial, and the “Promising Start Program” directly addresses this concern. Currently, diapers and other essential baby supplies can amount to roughly $80 per month – a significant expense for many families. The program seeks to reduce this financial burden and ensure new parents have access to the resources they need.
Program Details and Eligibility
Available to members in San Diego County, the “Promising Start Program” is open to individuals who are currently pregnant or have given birth within the last 11 months. It builds upon Blue Shield’s existing Medi-Cal Maternity program, which already provides support and education during the perinatal period, connections to community resources, and care management, including support for those experiencing pregnancy loss.
Eligible members will receive “Promising Start” kits delivered around their expected delivery dates. These kits contain essential postpartum and newborn supplies, such as diapers, diaper-rash cream, and breastfeeding pads.
Incentivizing Preventative Care
Beyond the provision of supplies, the program actively encourages preventative healthcare. Deliveries will include information on preventive care, scheduling postpartum checkups, and arranging pediatrician visits. Members can also earn Amazon vouchers to purchase additional diaper supplies and other necessities by completing a series of recommended postpartum care and well-child visits.
“This program is designed to be a key engagement touchpoint to encourage members to utilize preventative care options, like postpartum visits and maternal depression screenings, and schedule vital well-child visits throughout the first year of their baby’s life,” stated a senior official with Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “Through these touchpoints, the Promising Start Program aims to help support the member and close any care gaps for mothers and their babies.”
Measuring Success and Anticipated Impact
Blue Shield estimates that over 800 pregnant members will receive kits within the first year of the program’s implementation. The organization will track both enrollment and the number of preventive care visits completed by participants, anticipating improved health outcomes as a result.
“While having a baby is one of the most transformative and exciting experiences for a family, it can also be incredibly stressful and straining,” a company release noted. “We’re excited to help ease the financial strains of welcoming a baby into the family.”
